Our visit to Oban was spectacular and we almost dug our roots to live in Dunollie House! 85 miles northwest of Glasgow, Oban is Scotland's leading coastal resorts. Oban is set in a sheltered bay almost landlocked by the island of Kerrera. It was a busy fishing port in the 18th century but now Oban is dependent on tourism for its economic base. Oban is also the place to set sail on day trips to various coastal islands including Mull, Kerrara and Iona. McCaig's Tower is a prominent landmark built as a family memorial by an esteemed banker in 1887 overlooking Oban. Plenty of gift and souvenir shops, hotels, pubs line the sea walk with a fine view across the Firth of Lorn and the Sound of Mull. Each August, the Oban Highland Games are held with massed pipe bands marching through the streets. |
