Settlement existed in Hawshead as early as the 10th century and the name derives from the Norseman 'Haukr' who built its first dwellings. St. Michael's Parish (left) is the site of a 15th century church on a hillock overlooking Hawshead Village. The church houses a number of remarkable scriptural wall paintings dating back to 1680. The wool trade brought fame and prosperity to the Village in the Middle Ages. A quiet narrow alleyway with stone fences and buildings (left). The buildings are historically interesting. Many dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries with overhanging eaves, grey slate roofs, old leaded windows and outside stone steps enhanced by colourful flower tubs and hanging baskets. |
