Our visit to San Jose Del
Cabo led us to explore the dusty backroads leading north up the Baja
Peninsula. We fumbled upon a unique Mexican Ghost Town called "El
Triumpho". It was a prospering town long ago due to an operational
silver mine. The silver mine is now in ruins as are most of the town
buildings. There is a small population of mexican families still living
in the deserted town. The only conveniences close by are a general store
and a basket weaver's booth.
We
spent hours wandering the remnants of the silver mine. The only standing
feature amongst the dusty sands and crumbled buildings were smoke stacks
built of cobblestones and brick. An interesting vision was peeking through
dismantled smoke stacks to the only church in town invaded by pidgeons.
The church was the only building not being swallowed up in ruin.
We
couldn't let our trip to Cabo be over without visiting Sammy Hagar's
Cabo Wabo Cantina. The Red Rocker
wasn't there, but it was nice to see his Cantian. We had the opportunity
to see Sammy play with Van Halen in 1995 and he dedicated a song "Not
Enough" to us in honour of our wedding. Sammy had become good friends
with Sir Loren Adams, the arist featured on our Maui page.
The
best way to experience real Mexico is down those dusty roads. After
passing much road kill, we found another unique village called Todos
Santos. This is a small mexican town invaded by many artists. It is
a good place to shop and the prices are more reasonable than the tourist
traps in Cabo. Pictured here is the authentic "Hotel California"
as described by the Eagles in their famous song.
